Callan's Kicks is back on RTÉ Radio One & Podcast

The latest series of Callan's Kicks began in October 2020 - the 16th season since the show started in 2013.

Taking the story up where we've left off, this season focuses on the new cluster-coalition of FF, FG and the Greens as Micheál Martin enters a leadership fraught with national discord, internal party rows and a glowing Leo Varadkar enjoying his role as a sort of Co-Teesh and part-time Opposition leader. Eamon Ryan appears to be in energy saver mode.

New characters in the Kicks universe include Norma Foley and Catherine Martin and whoever finds themselves thrust into the limelight through cock-up or success, but usually via cock-up.

Series 16 also covers the Grand Final of America's culture wars, also known as the Presidential Election. The election has been head-spinningly hard to follow from shouty debate to positive Covid tests and everything in between. Ultimately can Joe Biden's grinning dentures outshine Trump's E-numbers-infused orange hue?

Is Boris Johnson OK? He seems to have lost his Bojo mojo and appears a bit lost. The poor man can't even sustain his Brexit for longer than a few minutes at a time.

Old favourites like Dobbo return, freshly crowned with a radio throne on the News at One and callers to Liveline never cease to facepalm the nation. Oh, there's also the pandemic and how it's spawned a new generation of celebrity Covid experts.

Callan's Kicks has never had such a mine of boundless, exasperating shenanigans to kick.

RTÉ Radio One, Fridays 6.30pm and on podcast.
